Cultural Divide Revealed!

Read this about the Boykin affair, and then tell me with a straight face that we don't face a HUGE cultural divide.

You know, dear readers, on which side of the divide Glorfindel resides. So I won't bore you with explanatory diatribes, or limp, weak rhymes...

(oops!)

I agree with that link you so nicely provided.
On this issue I think you and me are divided.
What Boykin needs most is for us to pray
For how else will asses like him go away?

Many people can't seem to separate a person's actions from his or her feelings or beliefs; Boykin himself seems to have trouble doing so.

It's clear that Boykin is a fantastic soldier based on his military record. It's also clear that he's a terrible leader based on his recent statements which conflict so drastically with the sense of equality, both religious and otherwise, our country ostensibly stands for and fights to protect.

Our military is the strong arm, the enforcer if you will, of the state. Placing such rabid ideologues in positions of power with the ability to affect both military and defense policy could end up threatening the separation of church and state that we claim to hold so dear, or at the very least perpetuating the appearance of our country's opposition to the islamic faith.

However, I'm fully aware that it would be equally dangerous to refuse to promote individuals to positions of power based on their religious beliefs.

The answer is simple, and to General Boykin I would say simply, shut the hell up and do your job.

I agree that he should shut up and do his job.

General Boykin should realize that regardless of why he thinks America is great, his statements while in uniform not only conflict with our sense of equality, but also with our *goal* of defending ourselves from terrorism.

No matter how correct Gen. Boykin thinks he is, his statements are inflammatory and provocative. If he thinks this is the way to win the war on terrorism... then maybe I just don't understand the ways of generals.
